Your Auto Checklist For Moving Interstate

We know how difficult and time consuming moving from one state to another can be, so we’ve come up with a list of things to make it easier on you when transporting your car to your new location.

Transfer Your Car Registration

The process for transferring your registration differs from state to state, as does the time you have to complete the transfer. It can range from 14 days to 3 months, depending on the laws governing your new place of residence, so it’s important to do your research and have a clear timeline for your specific situation before you move.

Step 1: Make an Appointment

The first thing you need to do is make an appointment to meet with a representative of the road governing authority within the state to lodge your application. You can do this in advance from your current place of residence or once you arrive in your new location. Once you have a date set, you can move onto the next step.

Step 2: Prepare Documentation

Once you have your appointment settled you need to collect and collate the documentation needed for presentation to the governing authority. This documentation will vary from state to state but the list below will give you an idea of what you’ll be expected to bring.

What you will need:

  • – Proof of identity
  • – Proof of current registration
  • – Proof of pension or concession entitlement (if relevant)
  • – Old number plates
  • – Completed application for registration
  • – Proof of Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance
  • – Confirmation of roadworthiness in the form of:

– Certificate of Roadworthiness
– Blue Slip, or
– Other applicable authorisation

Driver’s License

Don’t forget that you will also need to transfer your driver’s license once you move states to be able to continue using your vehicle. Again, the rules vary depending on the state but there are certainly specific timelines in place before your interstate drivers licence becomes invalid in your new place of residence. This is generally within 90 days of arrival in your new state. Ensure you know how long you have to avoid a nasty fine and the risk of stronger penalties.

Just as with your registration transfer, you will need to make an appointment to lodge your application with the state’s road governing body.

What you will need:

  • – Your current license
  • – Proof of identity
  • – Completed license application form
